Man convicted of taping Michael Jackson serves sentence in luxury

Featured Replies

LOS ANGELES: A man sentenced to home detention for secretly videotaping Michael Jackson aboard a jet four years ago is serving his sentence at a luxury hotel.

Jeffrey Borer is paying for his six-month stay at the Ritz-Carlton hotel because his house has a mold problem and his wife is allergic, said his attorney, Lloyd Kirschbaum.

"It's all squared away with the probation department," Kirschbaum told the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

However, the federal prosecutor in the case called the hotel stay outrageous.

"When someone is sentenced to electronic monitoring, normally the presumption is he's not going to be holed up in a four-star hotel," Daniel Shallman said.

The hotel has a restaurant, spa and two tennis courts.

Borer, 62, owns a charter jet company. He and Arvel Jett Reeves pleaded guilty last year to felony counts of conspiracy, acknowledging they installed two digital video recorders in a jet that flew Jackson from Las Vegas to Santa Barbara, where the pop singer faced child molestation charges. Jackson later was acquitted.

Borer was sentenced in October to home detention rather than prison because he is the caregiver for his wife, who has chronic health problems.
