I tried to deploy SSL a few weeks ago, but had major issues with a "too many redirects" issue, and I couldn't figure out why at the time, so I removed it from the site.
What is SSL? well its: "SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. And lately Google is ranking sites that are secure higher than those that aren't, so while we don't really save or even ask for any visitors real info, I felt it was time to just get SSL working on the site, and I've done a bit of work to make sure it's working. I'm not 100% happy with having SSL on a non commercial site because it does hurt the speed points a bit, but meh.
You can tell SSL is working on the site, and that your connection to it is secure via the icon indicator in the address bar of your web browser. In Chrome it should appear as: 
and it shouldn't look much different in other browsers. On some pages you might see an info icon instead of the secure lock icon, but this is only because the page has mixed content--some secure, some not, its a linkage issue, but not something to be concerned about.
