McCartney, Letterman Discuss Michael Jackson

Featured Replies

NEW YORK -- Paul McCartney returned to the Ed Sullivan Theater 45 years after the Beatles made their U.S. television debut there.

This time, McCartney put on an outdoor show atop the theater's marquee for thousands of fans Wednesday. The performance was shown during the former Beatle's first appearance on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman."

The Beatles made their American television debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on Feb. 9, 1964.

During his appearance with Letterman, McCartney recalled that it was "kind of scary" the first time the Beatles appeared on Sullivan's show.

However, he didn't acknowledge it when a floor manager asked "you nervous?" when the curtain was about to be raised for McCartney to perform "Yesterday" alone without his bandmates.

"You should be," McCartney said the manager told him. "There's 73 million people watching."

Letterman said that his impression of the Beatles was that it was four guys on a long spring break, having a great time. The Beatles went briefly to Miami the first time they came to the United States.

"The British car firm loaned us an MG each and, you know, there was a beach and sand and girls and, come on!" McCartney said.

Letterman and McCartney talked about the ex-Beatle's friendship with the late Michael Jackson. The two men recorded the duet "The Girl Is Mine" on Jackson's "Thriller" album.

McCartney advised Jackson to think about music publishing as an investment. Jackson bought rights to many of the Beatles' songs, and McCartney's hopes of getting a better deal with the new owner were in vain.

"We kind of drifted apart after that," McCartney said. "But he was a lovely man, massively talented and we miss him."

On the show, McCartney performed the Beatles hit "Get Back" and the song "Sing the Changes" from his most recent album.

McCartney opens a U.S. tour Friday at Citi Field, which is the New York Mets stadium that opened this year. Their previous home, Shea Stadium, was also where the Beatles performed for a sold-out crowd of screaming fans in 1965.

The press has made it appear that Paul didn't like MJ much and they didnt get along at all, ever since Michael bought the Beatles songs, which Paul was desperately trying to obtain, which anyone can understand why Paul would hate Michael, and not want anything to do with him any longer.

Turns out, Paul still liked Michael, and still has nice things to say about him, even though Paul was extremely disappointed in Michael for doing what he did.

Everybody knows he would have had good reason to no like Michael but I think we also know that Michael wouldn't have done it out of spite, when Paul told Michael, he obviously said how much they're worth and everything about them and Michael obviously just wanted them. He said in the interview with Operah "I just love great music" and to me that's a good enough reason to buy them and I think that's why he did.

Time and Time again Paul McCartney has said negative things about Micheal Jackson. I believe he just feels like he should say something nice since Micheal passed.

Do you think that may be paul has a reason to have disliked Michael about though?

MJ is my fav artist ever, and i think he was the nicest person, but if he went behind my back and bought my songs which i loved dearly, and was desperately trying to get, i'd probably dislike him some as well.

But then again. im sure paul had the money to buy the songs, just didnt want to pay it out for the song, so it was really fair game i suppose. Just business.

No he didn't have a reason to dislike Micheal , because I think under different circumstances if he had the oppurtunity to buy Micheal Jackson's Catalog he would of as well. It was a great investment. It's not like it was just the Beatles, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Lil Richard., etc.. was part of the Catalogs, too (which he gave Lil Richard back his catalog) but still a great business decision.

Reports is that Paul McCartney wasn't finacially capable of purchasing the catalog at the time so if Micheal didn't get it It would of been sold to someone else. I think all should be fair in business and just like he gave Lil Richard his catalog back maybe he would of done the same (who knows) to Sir Paul if he would of keep his mouth shut and continued to have been a close friend of his.

Just my opinion :D

No, I don't because I think Paul McCartney would of (if given the chance) done the same thing. It was a great investment. It's not like it was just the Beatles, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Lil Richard was too (which he gave Lil Richard back his catalog) but still a great business decision.
